The entire room began to shake and tremble as the engine started to overheat.
Logan felt a grim smile spread across his face. Burn baby, burn! he said,
sadism envenoming his voice. His work here was finished.

He climbed back up the ladder and ran for the exit as another tremor shook the
chamber, stronger than ever. It was only a matter of time before the whole
place went up in flames. Logan struggled to maintain his balance and
continued towards the exit. Finally he threw the door open.

As he stepped through, a sharp boom pierced his eardrums. He turned to close
the door behind him, catching a glimpse of an explosion tearing apart steel
and engulfing the room in a hellish orange glow. Water began to flow into the
chamber as the floor was ripped open.

Im running out of time, Logan thought to himself. I must save myself while I
still can. If I dont make it, I hope my humanity appreciates my sacrifice.

He climbed up the ladder to the next floor and hurried to the ships bridge as
more explosions rang out from the engine room. There was no one left alive to
stop or hinder his progress. So much for the better, he thought. They can all
sleep with the fishes.

He checked to make sure that the door outside was unlocked and ran out into
the night sky. The pile of crates was beginning to slide towards him and
topple as the ship began to tilt upward.

Hurry, hurry, he thought to himself.

Taking a deep breath, he leaped over the side and into the sea. Some of the
crates and canisters on board came tumbling after him, crashing into the sea
with tremendous splashing. Useless to the Scourge now, unless some of them
were willing to dive into the depths to recover the wreckage. But no one
could probably dive down that far without a diving suit.

Deep below the surface, Logan saw that the explosions had ripped open a
massive hole in the ships hull. With water pouring into the wound, the ship
was now being dragged down to its watery grave. Part of him wanted to stay
and watch, but the other part knew he had to get to the surface to breathe.
He surfaced and swam away from the ship. By a mere stroke of chance and luck,
land was nearby. He crawled up onto the shore and watched the ship continue
to sink beneath the waves.

Logan chuckled with grim satisfaction. He had done it. Never again would the
Scourge invade Earth. Humanity was saved. All that was left now was to return
home.

Once the ship had disappeared completely, he climbed wearily to his feet.
But something didnt feel right. Where was he? What was this place? This was
unknown territory.

No...this...this isnt right! Logan said aloud. His only reply was silence in
the darkness and the chirping of crickets, the tide, and the distant howling
of wolves.

Too late, Logan thought. I destroyed the ship after it entered a new
dimension. Have I saved the Earth, only to strand myself in the unknown?
The fact that he had destroyed the Scourges means of transportation between
realms was little comfort. If only he hadnt destroyed that crystal cross
Garibaldi had given him. Then he would be able to return home. But he had.
And now, he was trapped.

The fire warmed his body and dried his wet clothing in the cool darkness. But
sleep would not come. So much was on his mind. The massacre of innocent
civilians he couldnt save. The land he was now trapped in. And Katrina. Every
once in a while, Logan could still picture her beautiful face. Her warm smile.
Her gentle gaze.

When finally, sleep overcame him, Logan was reaching out to his arms as if to
embrace her.

He awoke to find the fire burned out. But by now, the sun had begun to warm
the morning. Climbing to his feet, Logan decided that he should best explore
his surroundings and find someone who would help him. Somehow, he had to
return home.
