The blood of his enemies and a little bit of his own painted the walls and
floor of the cathedral. With no one left to oppose him and still no sign of
Garibaldi, Logan knew there was nowhere left to go but further in.

Ahead across the stone bridge between two groves of trees, he saw a lone
building with a stone wall on both sides. He had never been this far into the
cathedral in all the time he spent among the Scourge. Somewhere beyond those
doors, he hoped to find Garibaldi.

Beyond, he found himself in a courtyard with twin stone obelisks reaching up
to the sky and two lines of stone arches. Four circles of rich earth from
which grew a beautiful tree surrounded him. Ahead, Logan saw two more circles
of earth with trees, four stone pillars and a fountain.

And in front of the fountain was a man dressed in black and brown with a
black beret on his head. He was filling a goblet with water from the fountain
and pouring it into the soil where one of the trees grew. He returned to the
fountain to refill the cup.

Logan recognized those clothes anywhere.

Garibaldi, he whispered to himself. As he approached the fountain, the
sounds of his footsteps alerted his former master to his presence. He did
not turn around to meet his eyes. Rather instead, he emptied the goblet back
into the fountain and stuffed it back into his robe.

So, the lost sheep returns to the shepherd, said Garibaldi. At last he
turned to face Logan. He saw the face of a man whose portrait he had seen on
the ship and in the cathedral halls. And is ready to rejoin the flock.

Behind his lips, Logan clenched his jaw tightly. Not quite, he said. This
sheep was never lost and it came back rabid.

A sinister chuckle escaped Garibaldis mouth. How charmingly unpleasant.

Logan kept his eyes focused on his enemy. This was the man who had cursed
this land, killed its rulers, formed a powerful army to wage war against
mankind, and ordered the death of Katrina. He had first doubted that
Garibaldi had cursed this land and that it was another with the same name,
but the diary he found in the cathedral confirmed what he suspected. There
was more to his former master than he once thought. Garibaldi was indeed
more than a thousand years old despite his middle-aged face. He was also a
person from this world.

You will never plague mankind again, said Logan, a smug smirk spread across
his face in triumphant satisfaction. Not without the Scourges ship. It now
sleeps with the fishes.

Garibaldis smile vanished, but his face did not show anger. Do you consider
destroying the ship a victory? You are merely delaying the inevitable! We
will rebuild what was destroyed and recruit new soldiers to replace those
who died. As long as I breathe and wield the power to travel between the
worlds, the Scourge will continue to wage war against humanity, our ultimate
enemy.

How ironic, Logan thought. Garibaldi and the Scourge themselves are human
beings themselves, but whether they had been corrupted by a lust for blood,
power, or glory, it seems as if they are no longer worthy of being considered
human. Perhaps they even consider themselves above being human.

All your efforts will be in vain, Garibaldi resumed. And yet still you
continue to defy us?

Logan frowned. The memory of his beloveds execution still imbedded itself in
his brain, his promise to her gave him motivation. Keeping his eyes on
Garibaldi, Logan wished that they were guns. With one just one thought he
could pull the trigger and be done with it. Vengeance would be his and the
Scourge would fall apart without their leaders powerful guiding hand.

Why? Why must you interfere? asked Garibaldi. What is it that youre
fighting for?

Times like this made Logan realize that joining the Scourge in the first place
a year ago had not only changed the course of his life, it now gave him a
purpose, a destiny. If he hadnt, Katrinas death would have been in vain and
the Scourge would continue its war on mankind unopposed.

Logan, are you trying to turn the girl into a martyr? It was as if his enemy
had read his mind. She refused to support all that we stood for!

What do you mean we? Logan thought. Had I known what the Scourge was all about,
I never would have signed on in the first place.

How would he ever forget the memory of seeing several of the Scourges best
gunners spilling the blood of his one true love as bullets and buckshot tore
her apart?

I dont need to, Logan said furrowing his brow. She already is one! You
branded her a coward, but to me, it took great courage for her to make the
right choice. I made a promise to Katrina that I would not let her have died
in vain. I will dedicate my life to eradicating everything youve labored to
build. Not only will it give meaning to my life, but more importantly, to her
death.

He saw Garibaldis eyes widen so he could see all the white, a mask of
disbelief without fear. Is that you think is worth fighting for?

Yes, said Logan. I do!

Garibaldi crossed his arms over his chest as his eyes narrowed and a frown
pulled his mouth down. You simple-minded fool! Do you think youre the only
one ever to suffer loss?

His head lowered so slightly with his gaze towards the ground. The anger in
his voice was gone, replaced with lamentation. I was willing to give up
everything, even control over my own soul for great power, all to win the
hand of the woman I loved. His hands clenched into tight fists with the
fingers clawing at his sleeves. And still she spurned me for another!

I doubt she even loved you to begin with, Logan said. The diary he found
in Garibaldis bedroom had spoken of Garibaldis deal and his love for Minerva,
and how she chose Edward for her suitor over him. Despite his hatred for
Garibaldi and all he stood for, he felt a twinge of sympathy and empathy for
his enemy. But something else tugged at his heartstrings and his soul.

After Katrina had died, Garibaldi had told Logan, Youll get over it. Yet
even though it had been a thousand years, Garibaldi never did put his own
loss behind him. He was more than just a madman and a murderer. He was a
hypocrite! Realizing this, Logan felt his skin grow warm as his blood boiled
and his stomach quivered with nausea. While he sympathized with his enemy, it
was now mixed with disgust and made him hate Garibaldi even more.

And alas, the king stripped me of my position and banished me from his
kingdom. And the people turned their back on me even despite all I had done
for them!

He shook his head. Such a cruel species does not deserve its own existence.
I have been preparing a thousand years for my greatest triumph. And when the
Scourge issue a new order of humanity, there will no place for hate, scorn,
rejection, or fear!

He uncrossed his arms. Logan, can you not understand that the odds are
against you? You are only fighting a battle you cannot hope to win! Come back
to my side and together, we will rule all creation. Your sins shall be
forgiven and I will even give you a bigger piece of all existence than the
others.

Sins? What sins? The bible says Thou Shall Not Kill, but it also says an eye
for an eye, a limb for a limb, a life for a life. After all he had done,
Garibaldi is now acting like he is the one who has been wronged!

Self-righteous bastard!

With all due respect Garibaldi, I didnt join the Scourge to murder innocent
people.

But as a soldier, you were trained to follow orders.

Logan reached into his trench coat and closed his hand around the handle of
his shotgun. Not the orders of a madman!

Youre out of your mind Logan! Im offering you the chance of a lifetime!

To rejoin you would not only betray my promise to Katrina, it would also
betray her memory and the purpose my life has been given! Katrina made a
choice to do what was right. And so have I. No, I will not rejoin you!

Not even if your own life depended on it?

There are some things so important, they are worth fighting for no matter
the risks! And another thing Garibaldi, you really should practice what you
preach you murderous hypocrite!

Such a pity, Garibaldi shook his head. You threw away a promising future.

Consider that the best choice I ever made!

Garibaldi rolled his eyes around in his sockets. I guess it was too much to
ask for. Still, your choice will not undo what happened, nor will it heal this
land. If you will not serve me in this life, may you do so in your next life.

Garibaldi threw up his hands with his fingers pointing up towards the stone
pillars. A burst of energy danced from his fingertips and snaked towards the
gargoyle statues atop the pillars. As the energy beams touched the statues,
stone began to crack, raining broken fragments onto the soil. With a demonic
roar, the statues shattered, revealing four grotesque gargoyles, two of flesh
and two of stone. The stone gargoyles were twice the size of the flesh
gargoyles, so Logan assumed that they were twice as powerful, maybe more so.

Kill this traitor! Garibaldi ordered. Bring me his body when you are done!
Hell make the ultimate undead soldier!

A cloud of smoke and lightning erupted around Garibaldis body. Quickly, Logan
whipped out his shotgun, aimed ahead, and pulled the trigger. The barrels
spouted fire and dust as dozens of pellets exploded forward. But it was too
late. Garibaldi had already vanished. What a waste of good ammunition!

Hey, where do you think youre going? Logan shouted as he reloaded. Come
back and fight you coward!

Coward, am I? Garibaldis voice echoed through the air. Believe me Logan,
you do not want to know what power I am capable of! This is just a small
taste! You will regret continuing to defy me! Now you know that I am more
than a mere man! With these powers, in this world, in this universe, I am a
god! And now you shall pay for your sacrilege!

Mocking laughter echoed in Logans ears as the gargoyles descended towards him.
