Using the key he had taken from the guard posted outside the doors leading into the entrance of the castle, he unlocked the dungeon cell from behind he had heard Agness voice. Once more he would come to her rescue. She would no longer be a prisoner of the Scourge.

When he had heard her voice earlier during his first trip down in the dungeon, it sounded strong. Perhaps the Scourge had done nothing to her as if not anticipating his arrival. But there was still the chance that they had done something to her before he arrived at this section of the castle, before they lowered the keep gate.

Only one way to find out if she had been harmed in any way.

He opened the gate to find her seated on the bed, awaiting him. A quick look revealed that she appears to be unharmed. There is no blood anywhere on or around her. He checks the floor for any signs of bullets or empty shells, but finds nothing. Even if they had shot at her they would have discovered the breastplate under her bodice. Would they have stripped her of it and left her vulnerable? In their belief that Logan would never make it to the castle, would they had subjected her to the same treatment Gwendolyn had suffered in the dungeon of their fortress?

She smiles in his direction as if glade to see him as her savior. Perhaps in a way it was as if she was being rescued from the Arcanius bandits by the man she had loved but who had left her to be captured. Now it was as if he had changed his mind and decided to come to her rescue alone and without help from the guards. Seeing her alive and unharmed filled him with relief as if he had come just in time to prevent the execution of Katrina. But both those scenarios were not reality. Her love did not rescue her and he could not prevent the death of his own. But in a way, both what if scenarios had come to life.

Agnes arises from the bed as he steps in.

Are you all right Agnes? he asks.

Yes, she said. They have not harmed me, though they expected me to die in here.

Presumably of starvation and dehydration.

Why had the Scourge not harmed her if he had reached the castle? Had they not expected him get this far with his life still intact?

Logan, the voice of Murlock is heard.

The communication stone! Logan takes it out of his pocket. Murlock, what has happened down there?

We have won Logan! said Murlock. The Scourges ground troops have been defeated with the aid of the armies from the kingdoms that were previously conquered. With this victory, those kingdoms have taken their vengeance against the enemy.

What losses have we suffered?

Very few. Thanks to the leadership of Penelope, the kingdom of Iconoclast has successfully repelled the attack with minimal casualties. She, Albrecht, Janus, and an army of guards are making preparations to join you in attacking the castle. I will also be joining the fight. Leave the teleportation stone on the floor somewhere to allow our arrival.

I know."

The news of the Scourges defeat against the land fills him with a sense of pride. With this victory, their final defeat was imminent and inevitable. They would surely make a final desperate stand against him, not expecting his allies from below to arrive. But what delighted him more than anything was how the news of the Scourges loss below would affect Revelin.

He takes the teleportation stone out of his pocket and drops it to the floor as he replaces the communication charm in his pocket. Agnes, you should take this opportunity to escape. Save yourself.

Logan, this isnt just your fight, she shakes her head. I have told you before, I have nothing left to live for. If I do not fight, then everything I have learned from you will have gone to waste.

But I have a feeling that the battle ahead is going to be even more desperate than ever on the Scourges part.

I am not afraid.

Still, for now, you should wait until Penelope and the others arrive. He gives her the key to her cell. After you arm yourself with the weapons from the fallen soldiers outside, lock the door again in case they come back. As for me, I will go on alone.

Be careful Logan, he hears her voice as he leaves her behind. There is still the chance that you may not survive. If that should happen, I will have lost the closest friend I have ever had.

Once more, he stands before the doors at the top of the grand stairway where he had killed the guard holding the key to Agnes cell. From beyond, he hears voices, one of which he recognizes as belonging to Revelin. Carefully, he opens one door ajar by an inch to hear the words more clearly. He peeks through the opening to see Revelin addressing two soldiers of the Scourge.

Damn that Logan! one of the soldiers says. Even in spite of our tactical advantage, he still gained entry to the castle!

How were we supposed to know he had a plane? said his comrade.

It matters not! troops said Revelin. He still faces immeasurable odds! He will never make it this far!

I still say we should have killed that woman when we had the chance! We should not have bothered to take her prisoner!

Perhaps if we had killed him much sooner, none of this would be happening! Logan detects great anger and hate in the voice of the soldier. But whether those feelings are directed towards Logan or Revelin, he could not say.

He sees the doors at the end of the hall open and a third soldier hurries in. I bring word from the troops spying on the battle below with the telescope in the tallest tower.

Tell me, Revelin says smugly, as if savoring the victory he believes belongs to the Scourge, did our ground troops make the kingdom and their defenders beg for mercy before slaughtering them and proceeding to raze the city and their inhabitants to ashes?

No. The truth is much different that that. The kingdom has successfully repelled our attack.

What? Revelin roars in surprise.

Our ground troops have been defeated and the few survivors have surrendered. They are now nothing more than prisoners of war.

No! That cannot be! Revelin shouts, refusing to believe it. We are the most powerful and feared army in existence! There is no way we could be defeated so easily!

Yet that is exactly what happened! And now the Scourge are on the verge of being purged from the Earth!

Try saying that five times fast!

Troops, so long as you live you can still fight, said Revelin. We may have been reduced from several thousand to less than a hundred, but we are still a force to be reckoned with!

You dont get it, do you? shouts one of the soldiers. The Scourge are finished! History! Disgraced beyond measure! There is no coming back!

The war has not ended yet! said Revelin. We still have men and women to fight for us in the castle. The Scourge will live on. And by now Logan is lying within a pool of his own blood. Once we toss his corpse down below, this world will cease all resistance!

Barely able to contain his glee, Logan throws open the doors. Surprise! he exclaims.

The three soldiers drop their mouths in astonishment at his appearance against all odds. Revelin himself whirls around at the sound of his voice, his wide eyes revealing his surprise.

You? Revelin stands motionless as if he had been transformed to stone by a mythological gorgon, his face frozen with disbelief. His face darkens with fury.
Damn you Logan! And damn the incompetence of my troops!

Logan beams in the face of Revelins rant. So much for the most powerful army in existence!

Shut up! Revelin yells. This disgrace upon the Scourge will not stand! You have not won yet Logan!

And neither have you and the Scourge, said Logan. My allies and I are one step closer to victory and the Scourges ruin. However, I owe it more to just my allies and my skills. Mostly I owe it all to you...Revelin! You and your poor leadership. If anyone is truly responsible for defeating the most powerful and feared army in existence, its you!

Revelins face is red with rage.

I hate to admit it, one of the soldiers said, folding his arms over his chest, but I completely agree with the betrayer.

As do I! said one of his comrades. All three soldiers are glaring at Revelin with looks that contained nothing short of contempt and disgust.

What? Revelin hisses whirling to face them with the fury of a tornado.

Logan is right, the third soldier said. The truth is its your fault Revelin. All the death and disgrace we have suffered against all odds is because of you!

You didnt address me properly! Revelin roars.

Logan already knew what was going to happen next.

If you had ordered Logan killed that evening in the city square, none of this would have even happened! We all heard what Logan said below. About how you stopped Janus from killing him in the fortress.

So my magically amplified voice was heard by them! Logan hadnt felt this pleased ever since his first kiss with Katrina.

In fact, every chance we had at killing Logan, you ordered him kept alive! All for what? Because you couldnt stand the fact that someone was better respected than you! Your ego has become our downfall Revelin.

You didnt address me properly! Revelins anger grows with every statement he made since Logan turned the tables on him less than a minute ago. He is on the verge of losing everything he had worked hard for during his time in the Scourge. All it will take now for his final descent into madness is one little push.

Well we all think you are hardly fit to command what is left of this army, said the third soldier. So why dont you go crawling back to and cry to your fiancee? Oh thats right! She left your pathetic carcass for your more successful brother!

And that did it!

You son-of-a-bitch! Reven screams as he takes out his gun and empties it into the soldier who scraped his ego. The remaining two troops watch in horror and shock as the lifeless body of their comrade falls to the floor, the front of his cloak drenched with fresh blood.

Dont just stand there you idiots! Revelin yells as he flees the hall towards the doors ahead. Kill him!

Logan prepares himself for battle as the two remaining soldiers draw their own guns.

Better late than never, one of them said.
