Taste retribution and choke on it while youre at it!

At long last Logan had triumphed over his arch-rival. Revelin, once the proud self-proclaimed elite soldier and commander of the Scourge now lay before him on the stone floor underneath the bell in the tower. Blood flowed in crimson rivers down his wounded beastly body and dripped onto the floor in a slowly spreading puddle. Despite his fallen rivals chest rising and falling to indicate his heart still beating, Logan decided not to bother finishing him off. Just as Katrina had suffered before she died, so too had her other executioners save Bellatrix who had taken the cowardly weaklings way out through suicide, and the soldier he had killed outside the cathedral nearly two months ago and now it was Revelins turn.

Soon, Revelin would bleed out and succumb to his wounds. A pathetic but fitting end for a man who had finally begun to truly make something of himself, only to throw it all away to satisfy the demands of his enormous ego, his pride unwilling to accept that he had an equal. A man who believed himself above all others. Now all he had left to show for it was his army reduced to being on the verge of being wiped out and him lying on the floor, broken, battered, and bloody.

In a way, it was ironic. Before he joined the Scourge, Revelin had nearly jumped to his death from a cathedral bell tower back home. Now, here he was in another bell tower and on the verge of death. It was as if Garibaldi had never come to save him in the first place.

Ignoring his fallen foe, Logan approached the tattered ruins of Revelins cloak which tore itself apart as his human body became beastly. Carefully searching the pocket, he found a familiar scabbard with a dagger resting within. With trepidation, he gripped the hilt and pulled the dagger up to reveal the cross guard. Set within is a magnificent pearl. Pulling the dagger up further revealed its blade to be constructed of obsidian.

With a heavy sigh of relief, Logan inserted the dagger back into the scabbard and carefully place it back into a pocket on the inside of his trench coat. Now all that was left was to find Raven Dark and end the war once and for all by doing what Lazarus never had the chance to do.

He had just taken his hand out of his pocket when he felt a sudden force collide with him from behind and pinning him to the floor, knocking his hat off in the process The heavy breath and a growl told him what his eyes could not.

Fool! Revelin taunted him. Didnt you ever learn not to turn your back on an enemy?

Logan cursed himself for his foolishness and leaving himself vulnerable. I should have blown out his kneecaps!

He hears the sound of a long scratch. He watches Revelin drags his claws across the stone floor to his left. Pitiful, you slaughtered my army, but you couldnt bring yourself to finish off their commander! You had your one chance to truly get the best of me and you foolishly did not act upon it! I however will not make the same mistake you made! If my troops were too incompetent to take you down, Ill do it myself!

Logan feels one beastly hand grab his hair and pull his head upward. But even you do not deserve the mercy that a quick death will bring. No. You must have time to reflect upon your failure. Spending every last moment knowing that you came so far, so close, and yet it was not good enough. Logan sees the claws on Revelins other hand glimmer in the evening light shining through the western opening of the bell tower.

I on the other hand will savor your last few moments, knowing that I have finally triumphed over the greatest challenge I have ever faced in my life. If I cant break you, I will destroy you! But no need to strike at your heart. All I need to do to cut your throat and sever your carotid artery and watch as your life fluid drains out of your broken body. But the pain I shall soon inflict upon you as I open this final wound will be barely felt over the greater emotional anguish that you have failed all who depended upon you.

Logan feels his head yanked up further and watches as Revelin begins to position his index finger underneath his neck. Some hero you turned out to be Logan! Revelin taunted. His finger rises up towards the side of Logans neck, a single razor sharp claw ready to sever a major blood vessel in his neck.

But before the claw could touch his skin, Logan hears the sound of a cannon-like bang. Beyond the corners of his vision, he saw an exploding cloud of smoke. He hears the roar of the beastly Revelin and feels the grip on his hair disappear as his head falls back to the stone floor. He looks to see Agnes standing near the open doors, a shotgun with smoking barrels in her grasp, staring at Revelin with a look of vindictive fury.

You? Revelin roars.

Agnes quickly reloads and takes aim again. You should have killed me like you did my father when you had the chance! As she fires again, Logan feels the weight of Revelin pinning him to the floor weaken as Revelin roars in pain once again. Taking advantage of this he wrenches himself free and rolls towards his hat.

Too slow Revelin! he taunts as he rises, putting his hat back on. Serves you right for savoring a victory that was not quite yours! So close and yet so far away!

Agnes shots had hit Revelin in the face and in the chest. Some of the buckshot had entered one of his eyes judging from the blood flowing down from the now closed eyelids.

You will pay for that wench! he roars, completely ignoring Logan.

No! Logan screams as Revelin charges at Agnes who by now has taken out a Tommy Gun and opens fire on her rapidly advancing enemy, her fathers killer. With a steady aim, she keepers her finger on the trigger, emptying dozens of bullets within Revelins chest, their hollow shells falling to the floor at her feet. But though the beast had absorbed enough lead to kill, he refused to go down as if determined to destroy his enemy once and for all. If he wasnt going to survive, then neither could his enemies.

Just as Agnes runs out of bullets, Revelin slashes at her chest with his claws. Logan had expected her to cry out in pain and fall to her knees, clutching at the tear in her bodice before finally falling to the floor and laying still. Which is exactly what happens.

No! he screams. The memory of Katrinas execution once more plays itself in his mind. The scenario he had feared had finally become a reality.

The beast stares down Agnes moaning form before turning to Logan with a sinister toothy grin. Dont like to see history repeat itself Logan? He snickers. Youll be joining her and Katrina very soon!

With a triumphant roar, Revelin charges with his talons as Logan prepares to defend himself. But though Agnes had probably been mortally wounded, he knew he had to focus on the fight at hand. The future of all humanity depended on him. He could not fail now!

The sounds of gunshots in rapid succession fired from a star-shaped explosion ahead are heard in his ears. With a roar of pain, Revelin stumbles and topples forward like a fallen tree. Logan sees a fresh wound opened on the calf of both legs. Ahead he sees Agnes herself on her feet again, with a steady aim of the Tommy Gun in her hands. There is a large open tear in the fabric of her bodice, but no blood is visible flowing from between the carved opening. Logan breathed a sigh of relief. The breastplate had done its job. It had been strong enough to turn aside Revelins claws and protect the flesh beneath. Even if it had been damaged by the ferocity of Revelins attack, it had still provided ample protection.

Looks like all my training has paid off! she said.

No! Revelin roars. Its impossible!

Talk about revenge from beyond the grave Revelin!

Agnes smiles. Not a bad actor, eh?

You were faking being injured? asked Logan.

Am I that obvious? asked Agnes. It was the only way I could fool him into thinking he had killed me.

I have never felt so afraid for you than I have ever felt before! Why didnt you listen to me and stay out of harms way?

You expected me to listen? asked Agnes. If it wasnt for me, he would have killed you!

Logan felt his cheeks burn with shame. He felt angry at himself for his earlier request. Agnes was right. She had saved his life. Without her, he would be dead by now, Revelin having successfully savored his final moments. And now she had saved him once more by taking down Revelin on her own, disabling his legs. All his lessons had served her well.

What was on your mind when you fired those bullets? Was it your father?

Not just. I had you in my thoughts. Every moment we shared together as friends. There was no way I was going to let Revelin take away my most special friend the way he had taken everything from me. You. My father. The inn. That family portrait. All those images raged in my mind as I hit him with everything I had!
Logan couldnt help but smile. In a way, it was as if Katrina was fighting by his side all along. Just as he had saved her, now she had saved him.

Perhaps now, Revelin would finally succumb to the fate that destiny had bestowed upon him now.

As they released each other, the doors at the end of the arched tunnel open. In step both Janus and Murlock. Janus eyes the quivering form of Revelins beastly body, his eyes gleaming with mocking triumph.

Where is the dagger? asked Murlock.

Right here, said Logan taking it out of his pocket. He shows Murlock the pearl and obsidian blade. The old wizard breathes a sigh of relief.

Here, you take it, said Logan. For safekeeping until we need it.

I believe that time is coming, said Murlock. But you should hold onto it for now. Even after everything, I lack the heart to curse my own brother.

Where are Albrecht and Penelope?

They are still fighting below with the army they brought with them.

I have seen it myself after I unlocked the cell, said Agnes. Janus and I helped fight the remnants of the Scourge alongside those two and their followers. Some of the remaining soldiers actually took their own lives rather than fight.

Shame Im missing the action, said Logan.

For now, what are we to do about him? asked Janus motioning towards Revelin.
Logan considered just leaving him where he lay motionless, but he could not let caution be thrown to the wind. Not after what happened last time mere minutes ago.
At that moment, he happened to look out to the west under the arched openings in the tunnel letting in the evening light. He walked out one of the openings out onto the balcony surrounding the bell tower. From this position it would be a long fall down below. And at that moment Logan had an idea. One for an even more fitting end for Revelin, a man blinded by his own pride and ego.

Ive got an idea! he said. Let us drag him out onto the balcony!

Each of the took Revelin by his legs and dragged him out into the evening light. They dropped the appendages upon the stone floor. Logan watched as a familiar rune traced itself upon Murlocks forehead. With the motion of grabbing something with both hands and lifting upward, Revelins beastly body is forced up and onto his knees. The beast glares at Logan with a look of malevolent rage.

Does this situation look familiar to you Revelin? asked Logan. Before you joined the Scourge, you were just a young man who could never amount to anything. The shame of your family. An embarrassment to their name. The paragon of failure. Shame. And disappointment. When you had nothing to lose, you climbed to the bell tower of a cathedral in your hometown, prepared to end it all...only for Garibaldi to intervene and offer you a chance at salvation.

Revelin growls in anger at Logans speech, as if Logan himself has hit a nerve. Unfazed and unafraid, Logan goes on as if savoring every moment. As much as he sympathized with Garibaldi in his final moments, he felt no such feelings towards Revelin.

But even though he saved you from death, you couldnt save yourself from yourself. In the end, your attempts to ruin your most hated foe, something considered your equal in every way, only led to your own undoing, destroying who and what you had made yourself into. The Scourge are soon to be a memory not just because of myself and my allies, but mostly because you couldnt stand the fact that someone was more respected than yourself. It is as if nothing you have accomplished since enlisting in the Scourge no longer matters. Everything you have accomplished has been undone. If anyone is truly responsible for saving the world from the Scourge, it is you.

Unfortunately, all of Earth itself will be completely oblivious to your achievement. Your name will fade away into obscurity as if you had never been born. And as for the people of this realm, all they will remember you for is the leader of the force they courageously faced and defeated. A man who could break, destroy, much less even kill his own enemy. The Scourge were on the verge of victory and your pride ultimately took it away.

Now, in a cruel ironic twist of fate, you stand atop another bell tower. And this time, Garibaldi isnt here to save you. It is as if it never happened in the first place. All you have proven in the span of your existence is that the higher one man rises, the farther he has to fall. In the end, your life meant nothing. As you said so yourself Revelin, some people are not worthy of redemption.

Janus! Revelin growls.

Janus only folds his arms over his chest. After you and Raven Dark abandoned me in the fortress, now you expect me to once more switch sides and save you? Not a chance! I choose redemption over the Scourge! I never did like you Revelin! Now, I welcome the chance to see you take the big plunge. Once you feel like you are on top of the world, there is nowhere left to go...but down! A fitting end to the likes of you, to fall from grace in the worst way imaginable.

You had many chances to destroy me Revelin, said Logan, even just earlier. And you still couldnt do it. What a waste! When your body makes impact far below, Katrina and Geoffroy, together with everyone you killed and who suffered because of you will finally have justice!

Revelin only sneers as Murlock makes the motion of raising his closed hands, pulling him up to his feet. Sadly you will not live to savor it Logan! After everything that has happened, everything you have taken from me, none of it matters to me anymore! I have no intentions of dying alone!

Logan sees Murlock open his hands before positioning them in front of his body.

Youre coming with me!

As Murlock makes a hasty shoving motion with his hands, Revelin suddenly reaches forward and seizes the locket around Logans neck with one hand. As Revelin falls back, pushed by Murlocks spell, Logan feels himself pulled forwards.

Logan, no! Agnes yells. She and Janus lunge forward trying to save him, but they are already too late. Logan himself is powerless to react as he is pulled over the railing and tumbles after his foe.

As Revelin disappears below the railing, Logan makes a desperate attempt to save himself by grabbing onto the edge. By a stroke of good fortune, a wooden rod with a tapestry hanging underneath appears in his vision. With both hands he grabs hold and hangs on as if his own life depended on it. He could only pray that the rod is strong enough for the combined weight of himself and Revelin. It was a long drop of about three hundred feet to the rooftop below.

As he hoists himself up with his chest pressed against the rod, he feels Revelins hot breath on the nape of his neck. At the same time, he feels the chain of the locket against the flesh of his throat like a vise gradually being tightened. Revelin clings to him, hanging from behind and below him, one hand clutching his waist, the other still closed around the heart dangling from the chain which by now has rotated around Logans neck so he can no longer see it. If a mirror was placed before him, all he would be able to see was the clasp holding the chains together.

Aha! Revelin shouts triumphantly. I dont need to cut your throat to take you down! I simply need to attack your heart...or rather...hers heart...her final gift to you!

Logan begins to choke and gag as the locket slowly strangles him. His lungs struggle to capture the oxygen he needs to breathe in order to survive. He can barely breathe, much less talk.

Oh dont tell me youre going to pass out now before we finish! Revelin taunts him. See, this is why I was always better than you Logan! Even in the end I have surpassed you! I alone discovered your greatest weakness and will now exploit it to end you! Even though Revelin knew this was the end for him, he is determined to take Logan down with him, his obsession with destroying Logan strong till the bitter end.

I have come too far to be defeated now Revelin! You will not have the last laugh! I swear it!

You were obsessed with honoring the memory of Katrina! Revelin taunts him. You just couldnt let go! Now her memory shall destroy you just as you sullied her name through all you have done!

You should have given me that one little push when you had the chance! Revelin said smugly. Now, you and I can die together! I am not the only one who shall fall from grace this day!

Logan feels several fierce tugs on the chain around his neck, it begins to bite into his flesh. Revelin begins to laugh in mocking victory. I hope you have a nice fall Logan! Revelin continues to laugh as if celebrating the victory to come.

Looking up above him, he sees Murlock, Janus, and Agnes staring down at the spectacle in horror. Janus has taken out his gun, but hesitates as if fearing he will end up shooting his friend.

Looking up at Agnes, Logan suddenly remembered something she had told him that night back at the Arcanius inn.

Loganterrible memories can be a great weakness, one that your enemies may use against you. Dont let these memories destroy you.

Now it seemed that time had come. But there was no way in hell he was going to let Revelin have his way. No way would Revelin claim a final victory. Logan had gotten the best of Revelin several times during the war. Now it was time to tip the balance once and for all.

By now Logan felt as if he was going to pass out. If he did, he would lose his grip on the rod and fall, taking Revelin with him. Somehow he had to save himself and ensure that Revelin would die alone. He would be able to enjoy the satisfaction of vengeance. And with the dagger still in his possession, he was the only hope of stopping Raven Dark. It was time to act.

The locket Katrina had given him for his previous birthday had now become Revelins weapon. But could he bring himself to part with it forever and lose the one thing that would remind him of his lost true love?

He realized that Revelin was right. He had been obsessed with honoring her memory just as Revelin himself was obsessed with ruining him. But had he truly tarnished her memory through his own foolishness? How he played an unwitting part in restoring Raven Dark to life? Reuniting him with his sword? So much death and destruction that had already happened? Humanitys approaching end if Raven Dark was not stopped?

With the Scourge on the verge of their destruction, in a way, he had succeeded in honoring her memory, fulfilling the promise he made at her grave. He had always kept her locket around him, opening it to view her picture, a reminder of his mission. Now it seemed his mission is nearly complete. And as for Raven Dark, there was still a chance to correct his mistakes and save humanity.

That chance had to be taken! It was all he had left! The future of the world depended on it!

Still clutching the rod beneath him with both arms, he slowly reached for the clasp on the chain of the locket. Forgive me Katrina. I hope you understand! With a trembling hand and a heavy heart, he presses the clasp. Instantly he feels a great relief as the chain slides away from his neck with another one of Revelins yanks. At the same time his laughter becomes that of a panicked man about to fall a great distance. With the locket no longer around Logans neck, Revelin loses his balance with that final yank and the unexpected freedom of the locket as if he believed Logan would never part with him.

Logan feels renewal flow through himself as precious oxygen once more is drawn into his lungs as his esophagus opens again. As he turns his head and delivers a singular kick to Revelin, he sees a small dark object flying off into the distance. He already knew what it was.

The locket. Flung from Revelins grasp with all the force of that final tug.
The weight of Revelins body removes itself from his own with that one kick. Logan pulls himself upward to stand on the rod, never taking his eyes off of Katrinas locket. As it arcs downward, becoming smaller and smaller the further its distance away from him, his eyes follow until it vanishes.

He hears the sound of tearing below him and looks down to see Revelin clinging desperately to the bottle on the tapestry hanging from the rod. But the tapestry is nowhere near as strong as the rod as it rips itself in half. The air is filled with the sound of Revelins screams as he is taken into gravitys embrace and plummets downward to his much deserved death, gradually growing lower in volume as his altitude decreases. The shred of tapestry blows off in the wind as if taunting the one who tore it free. Finally his body makes impact with the thick rooftop beneath the tower, cutting off his screams as his life is wrenched away. He had finally been dealt the bitter end of his life, a death that he would have embraced had it not been for Garibaldis interference.

Rest in peace Katrina. You now have justice.

Satisfied that his most hated enemy and the last of Katrinas executioners was dead, Logan stepped off the rod and climbed back over the railing. But his joy over the satisfaction of vengeance was tempered by a sense of great loss. That locket had been almost a part of him. The one reminder he had left of the woman he loved. Now it was gone. He felt the same sorrow a man experienced as his faithful canine companion breathed his last. He had saved himself and denied Revelin his own vengeance, but the cost had been high.

Good riddance Revelin! muttered Janus. He leans over and spits down towards the corpse.

Father, you can rest now, said Agnes. So can all the people he killed. His death is no loss to humanity.

Logan clutched at his throat where the lockets chain had tightened against. Though some of the discomfort still remains, it was barely felt over the anguish of being forced to part with that sentimental trinket. He looks back over the railing towards where he had last seen it before it disappeared from view.

As if reading his mind, Murlock hands him the spyglass inside his pocket. Logan peers through hoping to find any trace of where the locket had fallen. But it was no use, it had vanished from view. Whether it had fallen somewhere below within the castle or beyond the clouds, he couldnt know for certain. At the same time, he peered through down towards Revelins corpse. The head is surrounded by a spreading pool of blood as if the impact had broken his skull, smashed the brain, and allowing it to leak out. The face is contorted with a combination of shock, astonishment, and horror as if refusing to believe, much less accept, that in the end his foe had gotten the best of him. Seeing that look on the corpse was a small consolation for Logan.

He returned the spyglass to Murlock.

The sun has set on the Scourge, said Janus. It is over.

Not yet, said Logan. The Scourge may now be gone, but this conflict is not over yet. Were the case any different, we would have won by now. But I made a terrible mistake. And now my mistake threatens all humanity. I must correct it or die trying. Without another word he heads for the doors.

Logan, where are you going? asked Janus.

To my final destiny, said Logan. There is still the matter of Raven Dark to deal with.

Logan, hes too powerful! said Agnes. You would stand no chance against his magic!

The blood of Lazarus flows within me. Logan opens the doors. My birthright will grant me sanctuary.

Only against his magic, said Murlock. But it will not protect you from the power of the Sword of Judgment. He removes the sheathe containing the Sword of Iconoclast from where it hangs at his side and hands it over to Logan. Take this.

Logan takes the sheathe and hangs it on the belt of his trench coat. At long last, he would get a chance to actually wield the sword itself.

We will join you as soon as possible once we regroup with Albrecht and Penelope, said Murlock. Good luck Logan!

Logan walks through the doors and hurries down the tower back down towards the throne room. Once more passing through the hall of pillars, he opens the doors at the end and enters the chamber within.

Time to finish this!
